  117. "anonymous FTP" is just a way for files to be stored where anyone can
  118. retrieve them over the Net. For example, to retrieve the latest version
  119. of the sci.math FAQ, do the following:

  132. want to use is, type the numerical address instead of the sitename
  133. (numerical addresses may change from time to time thus their use is

  143. A bit of historical background on the sci.math FAQ:
  144.  
  145. The sci.math faq list was started during Christmas 1989. At that time
  146. I wrote the answer to all 9 questions except 1Q (Fermat). 
  147.  
  148. Thus, I didn't compile a list of contributors. With time, people have
  149. made innumerable suggestions and contributions. 
  150.  
  151. I estimate that I have received over 2000 mailings from over 500 persons
  152. commenting on the FAQ list.
  153.  
  154. As such it is not possible to explicitly thank them all. But I would 
  155. like to take a minute to commend all those who have contributed to
  156. this list in one way or another.
